The Romans are coming! Year 3 bring history to life

Year 3 Romans Dress-Up Day

We’ve already experienced the Vikings but today it was time for the Romans!  Year 3 pupils enjoyed a spectacular dress-up day that was not only fun for everyone but also enriched their history lessons.

We witnessed some brilliant costumes – from tunics, togas and sandals to centurion armour and weapons  – as each class marched between classrooms to take part in a range of Roman-themed activities.

They learnt about Roman army formations, especially the Tortoise (testudo in Latin), where each soldier’s shield was interlocked to form a “shell” above their heads as well to the front and sides.  That was great fun!

In one classroom, the focus was on making and decorating shields, swords and daggers; in the next it was all about creating mosaics; and in the last classroom pupils learnt about Roman numerals while eating olives and grapes like a Roman (as they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.)

All in all, today’s dress-up day was a fun and very interactive experience for all of Year 3 who brought Roman history to life – a big thank you to our parents for all your effort!  Your children certainly loved it and so did our teachers.
