GBA celebrates World Poetry Day 2021

World Poetry Day 2021

Today is World Poetry Day 2021 and pupils at Gulf British Academy have spent the last three weeks building up to this day by celebrating poetry from a variety of well-known poets as part of GBA’s Poetry Project – one of many initiatives that support our intentions and journey to an outstanding international school.

Each year group chose a selection of poems to study, analyse and explore during English lessons. Pie Corbett, Matt Windle and Nada Faris were just some of the incredible poets featured during the project. We even received an inspirational message from Pie Corbett himself as a surprise for all the children.

A message and poem to GBA from Pie Corbett

As a climax to GBA’s wonderful Poetry Project, some classes have submitted their favourite poems while others have written their very own class poems. These have been shared with you in the presentation below (best viewed on a PC or laptop). Mr Graham and Mr Bache from our English Department will also be creating a ‘Poetry Anthology’, which will be placed in our fantastic new library!

World Poetry Day 2021 gives fresh recognition to poetry from across the globe and encourages children to explore their own imaginations. UNESCO first introduced this celebration in 1999 to raise awareness for cultural diversity, and we are delighted to be taking part for the first time!

To quote the renowned Rita Dove,

Poetry is language at its most distilled and powerful.

We are incredibly proud of all children for their efforts and achievements, creating emotive and immersive poems that will be enjoyed by many for years to come.
