Key Stage 1

KS1

Key Stage 1 comprises Years 1 and 2 for pupils aged between five-and-a-half and seven-and-a-half years old. During these years, we focus on developing children’s literacy, numeracy, speaking and listening skills and we ensure they develop a love of learning to take into Key Stage 2.

Year 1

All classes in Year 1 are well-equipped and pupils have the support of full-time teaching assistants. Each class teacher is responsible for teaching English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art and P4C (Philosophy for Children). Pupils are also taught P.E., ICT, Music, Arabic and Islamic Studies by specialist subject teachers.

At this stage, phonics is vitally important and pupils will practise this everyday. Teaching focuses on building the basics of language and maths through a varied and exciting curriculum. Children also begin to learn more about the world around them.

In Year 1, homework is flexible. Spellings and reading books are taken home weekly and these should be read and practised at home.  Maths and English homework will be sent home when necessary. At this stage, children should not spend more than 20 minutes on homework as they are already working very hard in school.

Year 2

All classes in Year 2 are well-equipped and pupils have the support of full-time teaching assistants. The class teacher is responsible for teaching English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art and P4C (Philosophy for Children). Pupils are taught P.E., ICT, Arabic and Islamic Studies by specialist subject teachers.

At this stage, the majority of phonics should be in place. However, phonics classes still take place daily. Emphasis is placed on building further language and maths skills whilst exploring further topics in science and the wider world.

In Year 2, homework and spelling packs are provided each week and should be completed by the following week. Pupils, at this stage, should not spend more than 30-40 minutes on homework as they are already working very hard at school. Pupils will also take home reading books, which they should read daily.
